"Slasher-tainment" Imitates Life?
The word "art" simply does not apply here.
My local paper reviewed the new gorefest movie "Turistas" this past week, saying it's about
an organ-harvesting mad doctor. The picture stretches the boundaries of its R-rating with an excruciating sequence in which the prettiest and blondest of the Americans has her kidneys removed while she is still conscious.
I wonder if the movie-reviewer or any moviegoers seeing that flick will stop and realize it's already, really, beenhappening to real people? It's just that, they're CHINESE people, and not blonde Americans, so Congress and the American people can--and do--just look the other way:
Of course, "organ-harvesting" is a very familiar story: The PRC [People's Republic of China] has been doing it, with prisoners, for many years. In 2001, the U.S. Congress held hearings on the matter, which caused a sensation. But the sensation died down, as sensations tend to do. Organ-harvesting has gone on, with no negative consequences for the Chinese government.

Anesthetized, in some cases, shot in the back of the head, in others, and corneas reportedly were never the only organ harvested, but kidneys and livers as well. Of course, that then kills them.
Imagine if the filmmakers had made the movie's victims Falun Gong practitioners? It'd never have gotten a single. screening. anywhere.
