Students and faculty are protesting that the Bush administration's Michael Mukasey should not speak at the college's commencement, using the school's Roman Catholic "religious tradition" as their reason.
The same notions were in play back in 2006 when Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was invited to receive an honorary degree at BC's undergraduate commencement. Then too, dozens of faculty members seized their 15 minutes of fame with a sharply worded letter disinviting her. University theologians were brought forth to issue a fatwa declaring: "Secretary Rice's approach to international affairs is in fundamental conflict with Boston College's commitment to the values of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions and is inconsistent with the humanistic values that inspire the university's work."
The problem, of course, is the faculty's selective invocation of the school's religious roots. The honorary degree for which Secretary Rice was supposedly unfit on moral grounds was awarded without incident to other folks presumably equally, if not more, controversial to the Jesuit mission. Kate Michelman, the former president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, spoke at the school without incident. Rep. Ed Markey, a Democrat with a perfect pro-choice voting record has been honored. Ditto Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, etc.
Boston College professors don't like conservatives. They're not the only academics to feel this way. But to cloak their opposition to Mr. Mukasey in the language of religious mission is the real disservice to the school and its Jesuit tradition.
No doubt schools such as Boston College have a hard enough time preserving their Catholic character when so few of their students and faculty members actually subscribe to the religious beliefs that undergird the institutions' mission. How much more difficult it must be when these people start using the beliefs they don't hold to prosecute the petty political quarrels that are, in fact, their primary passion.

"After Abortion,...run by Emily Peterson and Annie Banno, two women who had abortions in the 1970s, ...tries to avoid the political tug-of-war that tends to come with this turf. They concentrate instead on discussing the troubling personal effects of abortion on the mothers." ~ Eric Scheske, Godspy contributing editor, in NC Register's "Signs of Life in the Blogosphere", 2/2006
"Godbloggers could, in the best of worlds, become the new apologists...[including] laymen with day jobs: Emily Peterson and Annie Banno, for instance, at the blog After Abortion..."~ Jonathan V. Last, The Weekly Standard online editor, in First Things's "God on the Internet", 12/2005

"I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion...[many are] aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and [do] not doubt that it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace...You will come to understand that nothing is definitively lost and you will also be able to ask forgiveness from your child..."
