Current Events, Random Looks, Must-Reads
Back in October, I went through the FBI's Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) in search of racial bias in police killings. I found that the overall ratio of blacks to non-Hispanic whites shot by police was 0.82:1, which is high given that blacks are just 13 percent of the population -- but I also found a ratio of 1.5:1 among homicide offenders. My results were similar last month when I focused on data collected from big-city departments that, according to a Wall Street Journal report, actually seem to report police killings in a consistent fashion. In other words, there is no evidence in these data that police officers are targeting blacks for fatal violence; the disparity can be explained by the disparity in rates of serious violent crime.
[Blogger's note: I've seen photos of local police here in my state stomping on a black man repeatedly while he was down. I know there is racism, white vs. black, still in this country. And I agree it's wrong. Black lives do matter. So do cops' lives. The point of the above link is not to deny there are some bad apples among non-black police/sheriff/law officers, but to add some more facts, just as Sheriff Clarke did in the above video, that all should bear in mind, but which some seem to refuse to...]
"Indeed, the outpouring of support for free speech in the aftermath of the Paris attack coincides with, and partially obscures, the degradation of speech rights in the West. Commencement last year was marked by universities revoking appearances by speakers Condoleezza Rice and Ayaan Hirsi Ali for no other reason than that mobs disagreed with the speakers’ points of view. I do not recall liberals rallying behind Condi and Hirsi Ali then.
"Nor do I recall liberals standing up for the critics of global warming and evolutionary theory, of same-sex marriage and trans rights and women in combat, of riots in Ferguson and of Obama’s decision to amnesty millions of illegal immigrants. On the contrary: To dissent from the politically correct and conventional and fashionable is to invite rebuke, disdain, expulsion from polite society, to court the label of Islamophobe or denier or bigot or cisnormative or misogynist or racist or carrier of privilege and irredeemable micro-aggressor. For the right to offend to have any meaning, however, it cannot be limited to theistic religions. You must have the right to offend secular humanists, too."
But this is as bad as what just happened at Charlie Hebdo and if this doesn't make you scream in outrage that any religious-influenced group/nation would kill this man slowly, over the next 20 weeks, then you have no right to call yourself a human being. Raif Badawi will die from twenty, once-weekly floggings of 50 lashes each, in the public square, with metal-barbed chain-whips, because the wounds will worsen till he bleeds to death or dies from systemic infection. All for "insulting Islam." Amnesty International said it is a "vicious act of cruelty." The U.S. State Department labeled it "inhumane." It is torture. It is BARBARISM. Period. It is no better than what ISIS did in beheading people. And it's what the Saudi Arabian government, our ally, is doing to this one man.
It's akin to the flogging done to Jesus Christ, over 2,000 years ago. Have the Saudis not advanced one whit in all that time?

"After Abortion,...run by Emily Peterson and Annie Banno, two women who had abortions in the 1970s, ...tries to avoid the political tug-of-war that tends to come with this turf. They concentrate instead on discussing the troubling personal effects of abortion on the mothers." ~ Eric Scheske, Godspy contributing editor, in NC Register's "Signs of Life in the Blogosphere", 2/2006
"I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion...[many are] aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and [do] not doubt that it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace...You will come to understand that nothing is definitively lost and you will also be able to ask forgiveness from your child..."
